What Is a Payday Loan in India? Meaning, Cost and Rules
Learn what a payday loan means in India, how it differs from a personal loan, who it suits, what it really costs, and the RBI rules that protect borrowers.
A payday loan in India is a small, short-term loan that a salaried person borrows to cover an expense before the next salary arrives, and then repays in one or a few payments over roughly 7 to 90 days. It is sometimes called a salary-advance loan or a short-term personal loan. Such loans are legal and regulated when they are given by an RBI-registered bank or NBFC, directly or through a Lending Service Provider, and every charge must be disclosed to you in a Key Fact Statement before you accept the loan.
This guide explains how payday loans work in the Indian context, how they differ from a regular personal loan, who they genuinely suit, what they really cost, and which Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules protect you as a borrower.
Payday loan meaning in simple terms
The name comes from the idea that the loan is meant to be cleared on or soon after your pay day. The typical features are:
- Small amount. Usually a few thousand rupees up to a fraction of your monthly take-home pay, rather than lakhs.
- Short tenure. From a week to about three months, repaid either in one bullet payment on the due date or in two or three instalments.
- Fully online and unsecured. Application, KYC, agreement, disbursal and repayment happen digitally; there is no collateral or guarantor, so the lender relies on your income, bank statement and credit history.
- Digital process, but no guarantee. Verification is faster because it is digital, but approval still depends on KYC checks and the lender's credit appraisal. No regulated lender can promise approval or a disbursal time before it has assessed you.
In India the phrase "payday loan" is used loosely. What you will usually see on a regulated platform is a short-tenure personal loan with a fixed due date, a transparent fee schedule and a repayment mandate on your bank account.
How a payday loan works in India, step by step
- Application. You enter basic details and your PAN, and consent to a credit bureau pull and bank statement verification. Platforms such as CreditThirty act as a Lending Service Provider (LSP) for the actual lender; in CreditThirty's case the loan is sanctioned and disbursed by Salora Capital Limited, an RBI-registered NBFC. The flow is described on the how it works page.
- Verification and appraisal. The lender checks identity (PAN and Aadhaar based KYC), income (salary credits in your bank statement or salary slips) and repayment history (credit report). Based on this it decides whether to lend, how much, and for how long.
- Key Fact Statement. Before you sign anything, you receive a KFS that lists the loan amount, tenure, interest, every fee, the Annual Percentage Rate (APR), the repayment schedule, penal charges for late payment and the grievance contact. You accept the loan only after reading it. The exact charges are set by the lender and shown in the KFS; the charges and fees page explains each line item.
- Disbursal. The lender transfers the amount directly to your bank account. RBI rules require this to be a direct transfer between the lender's account and yours, with no pass-through account of the LSP in between.
- Repayment. On the due date you repay through the registered e-mandate, UPI or net banking. With CreditThirty there are no foreclosure or prepayment fees, so you can close the loan early if you wish via the repay loan page.
Payday loan vs personal loan: the key differences
| Feature | Payday / short-term loan | Regular personal loan |
|---|---|---|
| Typical amount | Small, linked to monthly salary | Larger, often ₹50,000 to several lakh |
| Tenure | 7 to 90 days | 12 to 60 months |
| Repayment style | Bullet or a few instalments | Monthly EMI |
| Processing | Mostly automated, still subject to verification | Longer appraisal, sometimes with documents in person |
| Cost pattern | Flat fee plus short-period interest; high APR, low rupee cost if repaid on time | Lower APR, but interest accrues for years |
| Prepayment | Often no foreclosure charges (check the KFS) | May carry a foreclosure fee, especially on fixed-rate loans |
| Best for | A one-off, time-bound cash gap | Planned, larger expenses spread over time |
The practical rule: if you need the money for a short gap and you are confident of repaying from your next salary, a short-term loan can be cheaper in rupees than carrying a longer loan or a credit card balance. If the need is large or recurring, a regular personal loan or a lower-cost option such as a salary advance from your employer is usually the better fit.
Who a payday loan suits, and who should avoid it
It suits you if you are salaried with a regular bank credit, the need is genuine and one-off (a medical bill, a school fee deadline, a vehicle repair, a deposit due before salary), you can comfortably repay the full amount plus charges on the due date without borrowing again, and you have compared the KFS cost with alternatives such as an employer advance, a credit card or an overdraft.
Avoid it if you would need a second loan to repay the first (this is how a debt cycle starts), the expense can wait a few weeks, your income is irregular and the due date may fall before money arrives, or existing EMIs already take a large share of your take-home pay.
You also need to meet the lender's criteria. See the eligibility page for what is usually checked.
What a payday loan really costs
Costs on a short-term loan come in three forms: a processing fee (often a flat amount or a percentage), interest for the number of days you borrow, and penal charges if you pay late. Because the tenure is short, the rupee cost can look modest while the annualised rate (APR) looks high. RBI requires the KFS to show the APR precisely so that you can compare across lenders.
Here is a purely illustrative example. These numbers are made up to show the maths; they are not CreditThirty's or any lender's actual charges, which are always shown in your KFS.
| Item | Illustrative value |
|---|---|
| Loan amount | ₹10,000 |
| Tenure | 30 days |
| Processing fee (including GST) | ₹400 |
| Interest for 30 days | ₹250 |
| Total repayable on due date | ₹10,650 |
| Total cost of credit | ₹650 |
| Effective cost for the month | 6.5% of the amount borrowed |
Annualised, that illustrative 6.5 percent for one month works out to a high APR, which is exactly why the KFS disclosure matters. The same ₹650 cost may be perfectly reasonable for a one-time 30-day gap, and unreasonable if you roll the loan over month after month.
Three points to check in any KFS: the net disbursed amount (if the processing fee is deducted upfront, less is credited but you repay the full sanctioned amount); the penal charge for late payment, which under RBI's 2023 circular must be a reasonable, disclosed charge rather than penal interest added to the rate and compounded; and the prepayment terms, since with no foreclosure fee, paying early saves the remaining interest.
RBI rules that protect payday loan borrowers in India
Digital lending in India is governed by RBI's Guidelines on Digital Lending (2022), later consolidated into the Reserve Bank of India (Digital Lending) Directions, 2025, along with the Key Facts Statement circular of 2024 and the Fair Practices Code that applies to all NBFCs. The protections most relevant to a short-term borrower are:
- Only regulated entities can lend. The loan must come from a bank or an RBI-registered NBFC. An app or website can only be an LSP acting for that lender, and the lender's name must be disclosed to you. Any fee the lender pays its LSP is the lender's cost, not yours.
- Direct disbursal and repayment. Money moves straight between your bank account and the lender's account, with no LSP or third-party pool account in between.
- KFS before acceptance. You must receive a standardised KFS with the APR, all charges and the repayment schedule before the loan agreement is executed. Any fee not in the KFS cannot be charged to you.
- Cooling-off period. You can exit the loan during a look-up period by repaying the principal and proportionate charges, without penalty.
- Data consent and privacy. Apps may collect only need-based data with your explicit consent, and may not access your contacts, call logs, media or files.
- Credit bureau reporting. Every loan, however short, is reported to credit information companies, so repayment behaviour affects your CIBIL or other bureau score.
- Grievance redressal. The lender and the LSP must appoint a grievance officer, and if your complaint is not resolved within 30 days you can escalate to the RBI Ombudsman through the Complaint Management System.
You can verify whether a lender is registered on the RBI website, and report unregistered or suspicious lending apps on the RBI Sachet portal. Warning signs of an illegitimate offer include an app that will not name its lender, an upfront fee demanded before disbursal, a request for access to your contacts or gallery, or repayment to an individual's UPI ID. A legitimate platform will tell you plainly who the lender is; CreditThirty's FAQ and grievance redressal policy pages set this out.
Key takeaways
- A payday loan in India is a small, 7 to 90 day loan meant to bridge a gap until your next salary, repaid in one or a few payments.
- It differs from a personal loan in size, tenure and repayment style; the rupee cost can be low for a short gap even though the APR is high.
- Approval depends on KYC, income and credit appraisal by the lender; no regulated lender can promise approval or a disbursal time.
- The KFS must show every charge and the APR before you accept, and no fee outside the KFS can be collected.
- RBI's digital lending rules require direct disbursal, a cooling-off period, limited data access, credit bureau reporting and a 30-day grievance process with escalation to the RBI Ombudsman.
- Borrow only what you can repay from your next salary, and avoid rolling over.
Frequently asked questions
Is a payday loan legal in India?
Yes, provided the lender is a bank or an NBFC registered with the Reserve Bank of India, or a platform that works as a Lending Service Provider for such a regulated lender. RBI's digital lending rules apply to these loans, including a mandatory Key Fact Statement and a grievance redressal process. Loans from unregistered apps or individuals are not covered by these protections.
How is a payday loan different from a personal loan?
A payday loan is small and short, usually repaid in one go within a few weeks to about three months, and is sized around your next salary. A personal loan is larger, runs for one to five years and is repaid in monthly EMIs. Because a payday loan is short, its total rupee cost can be small even though the annualised rate looks high; the KFS shows both.
Does a payday loan affect my credit score?
It can, in both directions. RBI requires regulated lenders to report digital loans to credit bureaus such as CIBIL, so timely repayment builds history while a missed due date is recorded as a delay. Treat the due date as fixed and repay in full to protect your score.
